Lot No. 268

Jacques André Edouard van den Burgh

(Montpellier 1756–1803 Paris) A Mediterranean harbour scene with fishermen in the foreground, signed on the reverse on the original stretcher: Vanderburch, oil on canvas, 36 x 54.5 cm, in an original carved gilded Louis XVI frame,

Paintings by van den Burgh very seldom appear on the market. His charming little landscapes, which take their lead from the works of Claude Joseph Vernet and Lacroix de Marseille, were extremely successful in the late ancien régime. They were generally sold by the dealers, Merciers, famous art and luxury goods dealers who contributed prominently to the dissemination of the Louis XVI style. As a pupil of his father, the landscape painter, Dominique van der Burch, professor in Montpellier, Burgh moved to Paris early on, where he ran a successful workshop up until his death in 1803.
